A Word of Encouragement

Rend Your Hearts and Not Your Clothes

Return to the Lord
Rend Your Heart and Not Your Garments

Joel 2:12-14

Eternal One: Even now, turn back your heart and rededicate yourselves to Me; show Me your repentance by fasting, weeping, and mourning.  Rip the wickedness out of your hearts; don’t just tear your clothing. Now return to the Eternal, your True God.

    You already know He is gracious and compassionate.

He does not anger easily and maintains faithful love.

    He is willing to relent and not harm you.

 Who knows? Perhaps He will turn and relieve you of this threat,

    and leave behind some blessing as He goes—

– God is calling is chosen to return to Him.

– repent by fasting, weeping, and mourning

– We need to search our heart for hidden sin. Bear our hearts to him

– God is gracious and compassionate

– God doesn’t get angry easily and He loves us

– There’s a good chance He will forgive and not destroy us because of our sin, if we will just turn back to Him.

How can we search our hearts and bear our souls to Him?

We must read the scripture with open minds and hearts. Really ask ourselves what sin am I excusing as “not really sin” or as “mistakes” or “disease”. We need to get really honest with ourselves. Are we being obedient to His Word? His Commandments? Are we truly living pure lives through His Holy Spirit or are we living as our wicked heart’s desire?

When we read the scripture apply it to ourselves NOT to everyone else. Not to “Those evil people out in the world” We must begin looking inward instead of outward.

We must purify ourselves (with the Holy Spirit’s help) in order to come before the One True God. This is not an act of works for salvation. This is living in obedience to God because we love Him and desire to live for Him because of what He did for us. “How can we ignore such a great salvation?”

I want to begin to search my heart by studying the Ten Commandments. Much deeper than a simple read through. I recently heard Anne Graham Lotz say to read through them 3 times, listening and allowing God to speak to you about where you may be disobeying the commandments. I’m going to search my heart and see where I have turned from God.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way. {Psalm 139:23-24}

Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. Also, keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins; Let them not rule over me; Then I will be blameless, And I shall be acquitted of great transgression.  {Psalm 19:12}

  1. We often gloss over our sin rather than taking time to see it for what it is. God is so merciful to lead us to repentance and then extend His grace to forgive.

  2. Yes, I agree that surely our Lord’s return must be getting closer! Oh, may I let Him stir my heart and bring the searching that comes from HIM! Thank you for this series my friend!
